We wanted our wedding to be traditional, however with a contemporary fun feel where people could feel comfortable and relaxed. We started with the idea of having an autumnal colour tone and went from there.
Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…
Toby is a doctor and Dominique works for the government’s medical regulator. We both love the arts, with Toby being an avid oil painter and Dom spending time next to him making clothes on her sewing machine or knitting jumpers. Toby loves to take Dom to see the latest Marvel movie, which Dom agrees to just for the popcorn.
Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…
We got engaged whilst on holiday exploring the incredible Kimberley region of northwest WA. We had spent the day on a cruise around Lake Argyle near Kununurra, and during sunset when the boat was returning to shore, Toby proposed. Dom did a fair bit of crying with happiness before officially saying yes. Lots of excited phone calls were made to the family after that. We can’t wait to return to the area someday.
When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?
Not too long after we started dating, Toby had to Kalgoorlie for work for three months. We did a few weekend visits throughout, but the time apart made us both realise how strongly we felt about each other. After this, we were pretty much never apart again.
What was one element you were happy to splurge on?
We wanted our wedding to feel like a festival and for there to be something to do for everyone attending, from our many nieces and nephews to our grandparents. We set up a little kids area on the lawn at Assembly Yard with some toys and activities. It was hilarious waiting to make an entrance to the reception and seeing the kids absolutely running amok and enjoying the set up. We also had some talented family friends working on a large painting of Booyeembarra Park (which is across the road from Assembly Yard) which the guests were welcome to come and add to. They were able to point out who contributed to each part. It looks beautiful hanging in our house!
Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?
When the wedding started and we sat down at the altar we both went in for a kiss to say hello and then pulled quickly away at the same time – the kiss isn’t supposed to happen until much later in the ceremony!
Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?
Niamh was an absolute joy to purchase Dom’s dress from, connecting with Dom’s mum as they are both Irish. The boys had a quieter time heading to Myer to pick out their suits. Dom wore a delicate necklace that Toby gifted her a few days prior to the wedding, which just happened to go perfectly with the dress he hadn’t seen prior to the day.
