Emily – I work as a senior product manager in apps – actually in the world of wedding planning! Matt also works in tech and we live in London with our miniature dachshund, Frank.
We dream of moving to the countryside one day as our favourite things include cooking, long walks and cosy nights in. We met during the first few days at Durham University in October 2013. From the moment I saw Matt, I knew I’d marry him my roommate (and bridesmaid) can vouch for how obsessed I was, even hunting him down on Facebook. I spent months dropping unsubtle hints about getting married and we had discussed engagement rings a few times. But Matt insisted he keeps both the ring and the proposal as much of a surprise as possible. He booked a couple of weekend stay-cations for us and surprised me by proposing at 7:30 am on the first weekend away. The moment was magical and ‘us’ low-key but super memorable.
I was inspired by modern, black-tie weddings in the US but wanted to add a British countryside spin with elegant formal wear. I’ve always been obsessed with the colours and the cosiness of autumn and wanted a bold, editorial but classic wedding dress. We definitely splurged on photography and videography as we wanted special material memories of the day. We’re both big foodies and Matt loves wine so that was also a priority for us. I’ve thought about my wedding dress for years but actually ended up with something slightly different from what I always imagined myself in. I knew I wanted long sleeves and a simple fabric.
I chose oversized, organza sleeves from a coat made by the designer a few years ago, a square neckline and silhouette of the first dress I tried on and a simple but beautiful slipper satin material from another dress. I found accessories the most challenging part because I didn’t want ‘bridal’ accessories per se because I found lots of wedding earrings and jewellery a bit cliché and outdated. I must have ordered and tried on over 20 different headbands in varying fabrics, size and thickness. I eventually chose one from MaxMara Bridal.
My veil was a super simple, single tier, slim cathedral length. My make-up was also important to me as I’ve been a beauty fanatic for most of my life so having Jennifer Oliver do my make-up on the day was a life and wedding day highlight. Matt, We wanted a black tie wedding but as it was approaching winter we thought velvet jackets would be a nice touch. I was wearing a velvet jacket the day I first met Emily so getting married in one was extra special. My outfit was a dinner jacket (tuxedo) from Suitsupply but I replaced the jacket with a velvet one from Reiss.
