Sarah + Mirko by White Shutter Photography

A modern city wedding. We were having an intimate celebration because we’re planning a big bash in Italy next year with all our friends and family.

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…
Fun loving and well-read, Mirko was born and raised in Italy. He spoke one language his whole life until he decided to study in Reims after completing his undergraduate degree in Italy. He became fluent in French and made life long friends who we recently met up with on our first overseas trip together. He later decided to move to Australia with his best friend (Bart, his best man) to get a Masters degree in Finance. Mirko currently is the Operations Manager at an Aussie start up. While he’s not working, he’s playing futsal with a team of Italian friends, or at the South Melbourne market guzzling down a gozleme while shopping for a meal he wants to cook, typically fresh pasta that he loves to make us at home.

Sarah was born in Adelaide in the 90’s, and was raised in Lebanon from the age of 2. She dedicated her studies to visual/graphic design in Lebanon, travelled to work at a design firm in Barcelona for a short stint, then spent some time in North Carolina studying printmaking and bookmaking before heading back to Lebanon. After working at a design agency in Lebanon, she decided to move to Australia for her career. Sarah is passionate about creating a stable and successful career path for herself and is currently serving as a Marketing Manager in financial services. Sarah loves to hit the trails for a good day’s hike and adores dogs. She can’t wait to share a furbaby with Mirko, hopefully soon!

How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?
We met at work. We were both working on the same digital transformation project at the time, I was on the communications team and he was one of the business analysts. We didn’t speak for the first couple of months but would smile at each other when we crossed paths in the hallways. The first thing I noticed about him was the deep smile lines around his blue eyes. He always smiles with his whole face. As for Mirko, he says he noticed my mannerisms and the way I carry myself. I ended up inviting him out for a coffee over Skype for Business to finally get the chance to talk to him and learn more about him. The rest was history.

When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?
We spent 6 weeks apart in February/March 2022. Mirko went home to Varano, Italy to spend some time with his family after being away for two years due to COVID-19 restrictions. While being apart was really hard, it showed us just how attached we are to one another and how much we love each other and want to experience life together. We spent his first weekend back in Australia at a beach shack in Anglesea I had booked for us. We spent most of our time there talking about life, our dreams, aspirations, and non-negotiables, and had agreed to spend the rest of our lives together over the course of that weekend.

Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it:
It was a grey and rainy day in Milan. We walked from our hotel room to the Duomo huddled under an umbrella. Mirko wanted to propose at the top of the Duomo but the weather did not permit. We headed for the Galleria and walked through some busy crowds until we got to a somewhat quiet end of the Galleria. Mirko walked away from me and made a call, which seemed odd. But the, and in one fell swoop, he turned around, dropped to one knee, and asked, “Will you marry me?” I said of course! We hugged and then I noticed that he had a photographer organised to capture our moment.

Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?
I wanted to channel a modern boss lady look with a touch of 1950’s glam. The pointy sling back shoe, paired with a birdcage veil, and the caped blazer made me feel so confident and “me”. As for Mirko, he wanted a cream-coloured suit. Something light, airy, and timeless to compliment the daytime celebrations. Paired with a floral green tie and pocket square with a sleek tie clip with black enamel Mirko was good to go.
