Aileen + Lachie by Jess Oakenfull

We initially weren’t sure that we’d have a wedding at all so landing at our style/mood was consumed by the mantra of easy, fun and special to us…

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…

Lachie: I thoroughly enjoy working in remote places and have a passion for teaching young people to create things through woodwork. Outside of work, surfing, fishing and sailing consumes the rest of my/our time.

Aileen: We’re both teachers who love to be outdoors walking, surfing or fishing but I’m personally currently into lots of baking and finding new recipes to try out.

How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?

Aileen: We first met our friend’s going away party in January of 2018. I had just come back from being overseas and Lachie had just returned from a surf trip in Tassie. He was stopping into the party on the way back to Central Queensland where he was teaching remotely at the time. My first impression of Lachie was just that he was a really great conversationalist and a really interesting person to me.

Lachie says his first impression of me was that I was beautiful, well-travelled, smart and wanted to get to know me more. (way to get brownie points!)

When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?

Lachie: Pretty early on. I think by the time I told Aileen I loved her, I’d known for a long time that I wanted to be with her for a really long time.

Aileen: I probably came to this realisation later in our relationship, a touch fearful of the long-term commitment but I’d always known he’d make an incredible life adventure partner, it just took a little longer to realise he was for me.

Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…

Lachie: Well, I had the ring for a while and it was school holidays thinking I was the type of person that could just bring out the ring when the perfect moment occurred. But after three or four missed opportunities I realised that I had to plan something out so I would stick to it. I made Aileen wake up at 4 a.m. to hike up to Marions Lookout in the dark for sunrise ensuring we’d also be alone. I proposed as we made coffees watching the cloudy sky consume the sun.

Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?
Aileen: The weather! It was incredibly hard to tell whether or not the rain would hold off on the day teasing with pockets of sun so thinking it would hold, everything was set up outside but as guests arrived to Lauderdale Cottage it started bucketing down. Our friends and family had to gather the chairs, plinths and arbour, bringing into the sunroom. I had to get my dad to go check which way the aisle was set up before walking down it.
