How did Alexandra Kate Creative come to life, and what was the vision behind creating a planning and styling studio with such a design-led approach?
Alexandra Kate Creative came to life quite organically. While on maternity leave in 2020, and with the world shifting through Covid, I hadn’t planned to branch out on my own until industry peers began approaching me with requests. From there, the business grew naturally. It allowed me to bring in a new perspective, and curate weddings with my own spin on clients’ visions that feel both luxurious and deeply personal.
You talk about offering a fresh take on luxury. How would you describe that in your own words, and how does it play out in the weddings you create?
Luxury, to us, is personal. It doesn’t have to be stiff or over the top – it’s about crafting something chic, timeless, and true to the couple. We stay curious, always exploring new industries and influences, which means our weddings never feel copy-paste. Our role is to listen closely, highlight clients priorities, and translate those into details that feel effortless yet highly curated.

Your philosophy is grounded in genuine care for clients and making them feel comfortable. What does that look like in practice throughout the planning journey?
Every couple begins their journey with me directly before being paired with the planner who best aligns with their personality, venue, and style. We take the time to understand not just their wedding vision, but their lifestyle and relationships – the little details that make them who they are. We want to know more than colour palettes – we ask about favourite date nights, weekend rituals, family stories. As the day approaches, we check in on family dynamics, anxieties, even rest and wellbeing, so that when the wedding arrives, they feel supported and calm. It’s about creating space for our couples to actually enjoy the process.

Every couple’s story is at the heart of what you do. How do you translate someone’s individuality into an aesthetic that feels cohesive across their whole wedding?
We begin by getting to know the couple – their style, story, and the little quirks that make them unique. From there, we create an aesthetic that flows naturally across the whole celebration, from the ceremony through to the after-party, so everything feels cohesive, curated, and unmistakably theirs. We want our clients to feel at home during their wedding celebrations, and not in a random tent in a paddock, even if they are.
You have over two decades of combined experience as a team. How does that close-knit collaboration influence the way you plan and design weddings?
Our backgrounds span industries as diverse as superyachts, hospitality, glamping, and corporate events. This mix gives us a unique lens when approaching weddings. While each planner manages their own clients, our culture is highly collaborative – we constantly share ideas, critique concepts, and build on each other’s strengths. Behind the scenes it’s very much a team effort – and our clients benefit from that collective creativity.

New Zealand is your canvas, with bases in Queenstown and Wānaka but weddings happen all across the country. What are some of your favourite locations to work in, from iconic venues to hidden gems?
Private properties are always a favourite – they feel personal and allow us to design from the ground up. For venues, Akitu Wines in Wānaka and Mahu Whenua are incredible for large-scale events, while the intimacy and polish of Rosewood Hotels make them perfect for smaller gatherings.
Your work is often described as bold and fashion-forward. Where do you draw inspiration from outside of weddings, and how do you stay ahead of the curve?
Our group chat never sleeps – we’re always bouncing around inspiration from restaurants, exhibitions, cities we visit, even conversations with our kids. We stay connected with global peers and constantly research beyond the wedding world, so our designs remain fresh and forward-thinking. While trends often reach New Zealand later, we guide our clients to look ahead and trust their own style, ensuring their wedding feels timeless rather than trendy.

If you could reimagine one traditional wedding “rule” for the modern couple, what would it be?
I’d reimagine the idea that weddings must follow a set timeline. Why not stretch the celebration over multiple days, beginning with a more private ceremony and intimate dinner, then moving into a full-day reception and party the next? Alternatively imagine a morning ceremony followed by a sunlit long-lunch, with dancing until dark and a speakeasy after-party that takes on a whole new vibe.
