We got married on the coast in Malibu which reminded us of Australia.
Tyson – We’re both Australian born and raised but moved to the US for career opportunities and met in NYC where we both lived for three years. During the pandemic, we decided to move to LA. Anna works in the film and TV industry for Robert Downey Jr and Tyson is the part-owner of a construction company.
Anna – We met in New York through friends in 2018 but started dating in July 2019. Tyson lived on the same street where I worked so we ran into each other a lot. We also had numerous mutual friends. I remember thinking that Tyson was a really nice guy. I obviously found him attractive, but probably not the usual type of guy I would go for. But at a friend’s birthday, we started chatting and I realised how special he was. We clicked straight away and had a very similar sense of humour.
Tyson – My first impression of Anna was that she was beautiful, but I never imagined that she would also be so funny and smart. I’d asked Anna out on a few dates and the timing wasn’t right…but I kept trying! After running into her at social events, I saw that she also had an unexpected quirky side and was very down to earth.
I was planning to propose in the middle of the Williamsburg Bridge (in NYC), as this bridge previously connected us – I had lived in the Lower East Side and Anna was in Williamsburg. Unfortunately, when I went to propose, it was incredibly noisy because of the trains so I had to change my plan. I thought we’d go to the rooftop bar where we had our first kiss. But there was a party on that day so I ended up proposing to Anna in our hotel room at the end of the night. It was intimate and something I’ll remember forever.
Anna – We wanted our wedding to feel elevated but still relaxed and fun. It was the first time many of our mutual friends who had left the US during COVID-19 were together for the first time so in many ways it felt like a big reunion. It was important for us to have elements that felt like home. We got married on the coast in Malibu which reminded us of Australia.
My bridesmaid’s dresses were from Viktoria + Woods and the groom’s suits were from MJ Bale. My father’s side of the family is from New Zealand so I was thrilled that our photographer was from there. We were happy to splurge on the location. As it was a destination wedding for most of our guests (a lot of our friends were from Australia or NYC) we wanted the venue to be special.
