KAJAL + JASON by Art of Moment

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship:

Jason is French and I am Kiwi. We first met at a cafe in France, the day after I had arrived there on my OE. I was 18 at the time and I knew very little French, but ever since that moment, we have been inseparable.

After 8 months spent together in his home town, Jason made the decision to come back to New Zealand with me, and 3 years later he proposed on a surprise trip he had planned to Hawaii. Here in New Zealand, Jason lives his passion every day as the owner of a barbershop in Wellington CBD. I currently work in marketing and dream of one day becoming an event planner.

Jason and I truly are best friends – we know each other inside out. We love travelling together, going on adventures, surprising each other and simply just spending time with one another.

Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details:

We really wanted our wedding to celebrate our French beginnings that are so very special to us. We decided on a refined, romantic, French-inspired theme with a neutral colour palette. We chose Mudbrick for our venue, as we fell in love with its European aesthetic. Our ceremony was held at The Lodge and took place on the grass area for a softer, more romantic feel. The view from The Lodge and our dreamy flower meadow made the perfect backdrop for our special day and the semi-circle seating formation made a more intimate guest experience. The groom and his groomsmen arriving in a helicopter was also a great surprise for our guests!

Tell us about your main outfits:

I bought my dress more than a year before the wedding while were on holiday in South Africa. Vonvé did an absolutely amazing job at creating a custom Milla Nova dress that had all of the details I was looking for (and in a very short space of time!) – a low back, lace that crept onto my skin and romantic off the shoulder sleeves. I also loved the way I had two dresses in one, with the option of switching my off the shoulder sleeves to spaghetti straps for the reception. For Jason, we chose a blue/grey semi-formal suit to go with our outdoor summer wedding. Jason wore the full jacket and pants and his groomsmen wore matching pants with a shirt and braces to compliment Jason’s look. My bridesmaids wore simple gold dresses that were a gorgeous contrast to the boys’ suits.

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day?

One of the details that made our day special and unique to us was our vows. We both wrote our own vows and said them in French, as that is the language in which we discovered one another. Guests were given translations so they were able to follow along.

We also had an accordionist play our processional, inspired by the street accordionists of Montmartre that we encountered on our first trip to Paris. Another moment that was very special to us was our first dance, which was to one of our favourite French songs, performed live by one of our close friends on the guitar.

Although we had incorporated many details that were unique to us as a couple throughout the day, the happiest and most emotive memory that we both have of our wedding day, albeit being the simplest, was the moment Jason and I saw each other as I walked down the aisle.

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together?

Although it can sometimes be overwhelming and stressful, it’s really important to just enjoy every moment of the planning process together. Listen and support each other and just have fun with it!
