Margo + Mark by Catalina Jean

We both share a love of modern, minimal, and natural, and also appreciate elements of luxury & romance.

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…

We both work as hair stylists at a salon and as artists and educators for L’ANZA, a haircare company. We thrive on food, travel, culture, design, fashion, and beauty, all of which inspire our work! We share the love of creating and experiencing beautiful things; we are fortunate to be able to do it by each other’s side.

How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?

Our paths intersected within the beauty industry, where we met at a hair show for two consecutive years. Despite residing in different cities and states, Mark took the initiative to reach out to me during the Afterparty of the second year. Although neither of us was actively seeking romance, we discovered that we had numerous shared interests and were at comparable stages in our lives. The initial first impression was of two single individuals united by a mutual passion for the same pursuits.

When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?

Throughout the initial year of our long-distance relationship, we discovered ways to maintain our connection. One particularly meaningful activity we engaged in was watching a TV series together. We would synchronize our viewing on FaceTime calls, allowing us to share quality moments despite being in different states. “I found someone to rewatch a favourite show of mine ‘The Wire’ “, and she was patient enough to pause at the same time so there could be discussion; we learned a lot about each other.” -Mark

“Its funny, now we very rarely watch TV together, we have even left movies early because we would rather chat. Since day one, we have connected in finding new ways to enjoy each other’s company, and we still say ‘there is nobody Is rather do this with’”

Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…

“Every year for Thanksgiving, we have a couple of traditions that stand strong—an evening dinner out with my mother Lynne, our dear friend Sarah, and her daughter Scarlet. Dinner is followed up with wine at Ma’s. One thing changed in 2022: our go-to spot was no longer open, so I took the opportunity to elevate our wine and dine ‘day of thanks’ at an iconic steakhouse in our area, The Lexington, to enjoy Steak & Martinis and a surprise proposal! After an excellent dinner, Possibly one too many martinis and a couple of hiccups… I got down on my knee. She said yes! Margo had always desired to explore New York during the holidays. On the car ride home, I surprised Margo with a weekend getaway to one of our favourite cities, New York, the next morning to celebrate.” -Mark.

Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding.

Intimate, Timeless and Classic. We both share a love of modern, minimal, and natural, and also appreciate elements of luxury & romance. Palm Springs is the perfect setting. As far as venue, we love food and dining out—Martinis & Steak- is our favourite for celebrations.

What was one element you were happy to splurge on?

Food and Photos. Our shared passions for food and photography play a significant role in our lives. Exceptional cuisine and beverages are our love language. We were thrilled to discover a venue that not only offered a stunning space that resonated with our aesthetic but also provided a made-to-order menu tailored for our guests alongside a ‘speakeasy’ bar serving exquisite craft cocktails of our choice.

As stylists with experience in numerous photo shoots, we both value an editorial approach to photography. It was essential for us to maintain an intimate and effortless celebration, so we prioritized finding a photographer with whom we felt a genuine connection. We wanted to ensure that they could capture both the candid moments and the editorial shots that would beautifully document our special day.

Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?

We prepared gift boxes for our guests as we hosted a destination elopement, intentionally leaving a little space for a local edible treat to be added on the day of the event. My mother, who spends her winters in Palm Springs, inquired about our remaining tasks upon our arrival. Margo mentioned her desire to find a small, locally made treat, ideally something visually appealing like a black-and-white macaron. My mother, thrilled to know just the right place, promptly called to place an order that evening.

On the morning of the wedding, my sole task was to pick up the macarons. I didn’t question why I was collecting French macarons from a Jewish deli. However, upon arrival, I began to feel anxious as they struggled to hand me three large boxes. It turned out my mother had ordered 30 macaroons, not macarons.

Needless to say, trying to stuff giant, dense mounds into our gift boxes that only had planned room for small, delicate cookies made for a good laugh.

Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?

Initially, my plan was to purchase a simple non-bridal dress. However, as I tried a few items, I realized that I wanted something more refined; nothing seemed to align with my vision. With five months left until the big day, I felt unprepared for the task of gown shopping. One Saturday, I had some free time, so I revisited my Pinterest board and noticed that I had pinned several dresses by the same designer. I researched to see if a local boutique carried Inez Di Santo’s, discovered one nearby, and made an appointment.

I did not disclose my specific interest in that designer when I arrived. I shared my wedding vision with the two sales associates, who quickly responded that they believed they had a dress that would perfectly match my concept. Ironically, it was called the Margot and was available off the rack in my size. While I tried on a few other dresses, this one stood out as my favourite. However, it felt somewhat ironic and perhaps a bit vain to purchase a dress that shared my name. I decided to leave and discuss my thoughts over lunch with Mark.

When I mentioned that it was an Inez gown, he immediately pulled out his phone and scrolled through pictures from New York Fashion Week in 2016, where he had styled hair for Inez Di Santo. That year was significant to us—it was when we first met. Mark praised Inez and her team, and his endorsement became my deciding factor.
