Film-led portraits capturing friendship, spontaneity and modern intimacy.
At Together Journal, we are always drawn to those quietly expanding the definition of what wedding photography can be. Recently, It’s Beautiful Here introduced a new offering of couples and friends shoots, and it immediately resonated with us.

Photographed predominantly on film — the medium through which they first learned photography together — these sessions feel both nostalgic and deeply intentional. They offer something meaningful for those who may not be getting married, yet still wish to capture their connection, as well as for couples seeking a more considered portrait experience outside of the pace of their wedding day.

One particular shoot with close friends Teresa and Tam felt especially aligned. While the team had initially put out a call for couples, this moment came together more instinctively. Spotting Teresa on the street wearing red Adidas — perfectly echoing the tones of a baby dress and bouquet they had sourced — it felt like a return to their earlier, more spontaneous way of working. She agreed to be photographed alongside Tam, a friendship that itself began by chance at a Melbourne fashion event.

The result is a visual memento of their connection, shaped by references to Kemmie The Cat’s vintage Hong Kong imagery, alongside the work of Nan Goldin, Wong Kar Wai and Juergen Teller. There is a cinematic quality throughout, underscored by a sense of nostalgia and a richly layered palette.

What we particularly admire is the collaborative nature of these shoots. Each session is shaped by the individuals themselves, from personal references and music to meaningful locations, resulting in imagery that feels both intimate and expressive. Shot across a collection of vintage film cameras alongside digital, the work balances spontaneity with intention.

In a time where modern couples are seeking more personal and less prescriptive ways to document their lives, this feels like a thoughtful and beautifully executed extension of what photography can offer.
