Can you tell us about how you got started as a wedding photographer and what drew you to destination weddings?
My love of photography began when travelling around India for 6 months in my early 20s. I had a small point and shoot camera and just fell in love with capturing the beauty of what I saw around me. India is a country like no other and in terms of photography, it’s truly awe-inspiring. Ever since then, I haven’t put my camera down! Not only did I find my love of photography but I also became a travel addict. Throughout my 20s and 30s, I hopped on a plane every chance I could get to travel around Asia, the Middle East and road trips in Africa. These things all led me to capturing Destination Weddings.
How does your experience working in both Provence and London influence your approach to capturing weddings in these two distinct locations?
Most of my weddings are in France, UK and Dubai, all of which have very different lighting, aesthetics and cultural traditions. I believe that the constant change in my environment really helps me to be a better photographer as it keeps me on my toes. I’m permanently learning and adapting. Not only does it make me very proficient in different lighting situations but I’m also great at drawing out the best in people from all corners of the world!
What are some of the key elements you look for when photographing a wedding in a scenic destination like Provence?
The most important element to consider when shooting a wedding in the Provence is the light. The South of France is famous for its magical light but the harsh summer sun and dark Chateaus also provide lots of challenges. So, it’s critical to understand how to navigate this. After years of shooting here, I have a deep understanding how to work with the light in France.
Secondly is the environment. Why have the couple chosen the location? Is it for the nature such as centuries old olive trees or vineyards, or perhaps the historical Chateau or my favourite the sun kissed Mediterranean Sea? By understanding what has drawn the couple to the location, it allows me to make sure I incorporate these details into the couple photos and details. So, when they receive the final gallery it tells a story of the day and location.
Could you share one or two of your favourite wedding moments that you’ve captured in either Provence or London? What made those moments special?
One of my weddings in the Provence last year was an absolute favourite. The couple were incredibly creative, she was a fashion marketer and him a film director. We shared lots of passions such as film photography, so they really allowed me a lot of creative freedom and it led to some of my best work to date.
A moment that I always adore as a photographer is when a couple choose to do a first look. I find that these moments before the ceremony allow the couple to be more connected and less stressed than when we do the couple photos after seeing all their friends and family.
How do you work with couples to ensure their vision for their wedding day is reflected in your photography?
For me, my wedding photography is a collaborative project. I don’t have an ego when it comes to my process. The most important aspect of the day is that the couple feel comfortable and I capture the images that feel true to them. I take the time to get to know the couple, to always be at the other end of the phone if they need advice and to trust my instincts on the day. To read when they need space and learn how to make them relax.
What is your approach to creating a relaxed atmosphere for couples, especially when they may be nervous or overwhelmed on their wedding day?
Talking! I try to establish a good relationship with my couples before the wedding day by checking in on the wedding planning process and always being there if they need me. On the day, I like to feel like a friend rather than a photographer. I find that building this rapport between us helps the couple to feel like they are just spending some quiet moments with one of their guests during the couple photos. The aim is to try and make them forget we’re taking photos, so we can achieve those beautiful natural photos!
Do you have any tips for couples planning a destination wedding, particularly when it comes to choosing the perfect location for their wedding photos?
Don’t be afraid to ask your suppliers a lot of questions. They understand the cultural nuances, understand the light and should be able to offer you lots of local advice. When it comes to the location there are so many factors to consider, so it really depends on the couple’s priorities. In terms of photography, it’s important to consider the aesthetic feel that you want. Do you want a location that is surrounded by nature or one that has sea views?
What are some of your favorite wedding venues or hidden gems for destination weddings in Provence and London?
Oh in the Provence there are so many to choose from but if I had to pick three favourites it would be La Bastide de Marie, Villa Baulieu and Bastide du Roy. For the UK, it would be Soho Farmhouse, Kew Gardens and The Ned in London. For Dubai, it would be Desert Palm, Park Hyatt Dubai and One & Only the Palm.
What is one piece of advice you would give couples when selecting a wedding photographer for their destination wedding?
Make sure you jump on a call before you book them. I believe that aside from style, one of the most important aspects of choosing your photographer is that you like them! Your photographer will be at your side throughout the whole wedding day, so it’s incredibly important that your energies align. On a video call, you’ll be able to get a good idea as to whether they’re a good fit for you.
