Kirsty Penetitio is renowned for her natural glam looks, which are timeless and lasting.

Tell us about your background. How did Kirsty Penetito Makeup Artistry come to be?

I have always had an eye for beauty and all things glamorous. As far back as I can remember I was always dressing up, dreaming of a life of travel and exciting opportunities.

I’m drawn to the fashion and beauty industry, the way it makes me feel and how it impacts others and gives new found confidence. I’ve always loved leafing through fashion magazines and discovering the latest trends to spark new ideas and techniques, and am intrigued by the glamorous lifestyles of the rich and famous.

I was 24 when I saw an ad in my local paper in Queenstown for a Diploma in Film and Television Makeup Artistry in Auckland. I knew this was for me right away. In no time I had moved to Auckland and found a place to live near Onetangi Beach on Waiheke Island with friends who had just moved there, the stars had aligned. I commuted to Auckland everyday for six months and trained with the leading makeup artist and founder of the school, which I loved and truly found my passion.

SInce then I have worked hard at building my business and creating a name for myself as a makeup artist. Making others look and feel beautiful is what I love to do.

What sets KPMA apart? What do you think makes your makeup truly unique and timeless?

I have an eye for detail and am able to visualise a look and colour story for my client. I work to accentuate the natural beauty of my clients so that when they look in the mirror, they still see themselves but feel delighted with this version of beauty we’ve created. My makeup is also skin-focused; it’s important to take a lot of time prepping the skin so the makeup lasts and looks radiant all day. I am renowned for my natural glam looks, which are timeless and lasting.

To me, it’s not just a job; it’s a lifestyle. It’s where I find a sense of purpose and a way to express my creative passion.

How would you describe your makeup aesthetic? Should brides try a few different looks before settling on ‘the one’?

I always recommend a makeup trial before the day and creating a mood board for inspiration. It’s a process that a bride can use to create the final look on her wedding day.

I would describe my makeup style as timeless chic with a modern twist. To see all my latest looks, check out www.makeupartistry.co.nz

What trends are you noticing in Makeup that you are really loving at the moment and for the coming season?

Blush, I’m obsessed. It’s everything. Not too much, not too little. If it’s done skillfully the photos come out beautifully as it lifts and defines the structure of the face. Soft, romantic hues are timeless and beautiful.

Why should brides and bridesmaids consider you for their wedding day? What makes your pieces a beautiful choice for these moments?

Not only do they get my knowledge, skills and experience, but they also get me.

To me, it’s more than being a good makeup artist; you have to be the package. Weddings are times of heightened emotion. I am there to create a calming environment, to read the room and make my bride feel at ease. I work closely with all those involved, especially the hairdresser, so the bride feels truly listened to and looked after and has trust in the process. I’m also there as a confidant; it is an honour and privilege to be chosen to be involved in such a memorable day.

Beauty preparation is an important part leading up to the wedding day. What beauty advice would you give brides-to-be leading up to the wedding day?

I’m a firm believer that looking after and caring for your skin will result in a more polished and effortless look. Makeup is not there to hide features but to enhance them and bring out the client’s inner glow.

Can you tell us about one or two of your favourite weddings you have worked on recently?

All weddings are unique and special in their own way. I just couldn’t pick one.

What inspires you when designing new makeup looks? Are there any particular influences you often explore?

I’m constantly studying and exploring new looks and trends and investing in new makeup and brushes. I find inspiration from the latest looks and luxury brands in the fashion industry. However, not all these looks or trends are suitable for weddings and my clients. I take ideas and make them my own, using the latest techniques and products to make a bespoke look.

What’s next for KPMA? Are there any exciting new collections, collaborations, or innovations on the horizon?

Yes! I’m branching out into the luxury wedding industry and fashion shoots. Recently I worked with the talented Jess Hong for the cover editorial of Denizen magazine. You can read more about this on my website www.makeupartistry.co.nz.

I’m open to travelling to work with brides across New Zealand and internationally. In the future, I plan to travel to Europe to work during the summer wedding season. I’m incredibly lucky to call Queenstown my home, as it’s a luxury destination where I meet brides from all over the world.
