In this Q&A, Olga Bhana shares insights into her journey, the inspiration behind her photography, and valuable advice for couples looking to find the perfect photographer for their special day.
Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do. What is special/unique about you as a photographer?
I’m a romantic introvert with a touch of Eastern European love for structure and clarity. As my clients say, I give my all and preserve memories in a gentle way. I would love to think that through my work it is obvious that the love between two people and their connection to the family and friends captured sincerely.
What do you think is most important for people to consider when looking for a wedding photographer and what would your number one tip be to help couples in their wedding planning journey?
If I were to choose a wedding photographer today, the very first part would be connecting to their work. Then, I would be paying close attention to how I feel around this person. Trust is important to me.
Every wedding planning journey is different, but my main advice would be to always remember that a wedding is a celebration of love between two people. It can be between just two of them, or it can be shared with everyone they know. There are no rules!
What inspires you and your photography?
Cinematography and storytelling. It became a habit of mine to notice how films are shot, what light was used and if a story flows. My favourites are “Belfast” and “Peaky Blinders” – so much to take from there!
Can you tell us about your journey as a wedding photographer and how your style has evolved over time?
I started as a family photographer and grew a lot over the course of 2 years. This is when I realised I wanted to do more and weddings were exactly where I was headed. Somehow I managed to book my first 14 weddings with only 2 styled shoots under my belt. I still remember my first wedding and shaking hands! Over the past 5 years the style of my work evolved a lot, but one thing has never changed – emotions and connections are the most important elements of what I do.
How do you establish a connection with your clients before the wedding? How does this relationship influence your work?
This is where I insist on either meeting in person or at least a zoom call. From the first few minutes, it is obvious whether we are a good match or it would be better to part ways. It is very important to build trust and for my clients to know that they can rely on me. The more they are comfortable with me, the easier it will be to be around them and capture genuine moments.
What are your favourite moments to capture during a wedding, and are there any specific emotions or scenes that you always look for?
I love getting ready moments! There’s so much to tell and unfold. Details, hidden emotions, intimacy. On the contrary, the first few minutes straight after the ceremony are the best! Big hugs, laughter and so much love. If there are grandparents or children, I always keep an eye on them – there will be either a few food tears or epic funny moments.
Where do you see wedding trends heading in the future?
The history repeats itself and what was trending a few decades ago would find its way to be popular again. Photographers will be using film more and more, there will be a vintage feel to their work though classics will never die.
Any exciting plans for the future?
The future itself is exciting enough. I will be back to share the achievements.
