In the beginning, our relationship was a case of right person, wrong time. At 21 and 22 respectively, we both had a lot of growing up to do and ended up parting ways.
Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…
Karl and I live on the Gold Coast, Queensland with our two Golden Retrievers Lux & Theo. We both work together for my family’s business in the construction industry.
At the moment, we are keeping ourselves busy with some DIY house renovations and landscaping. Karl is a jack of all trades and is determined to make our little 1980s cottage into our forever home.
How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?
Emily – We met on a night out in Surfers Paradise on Boxing Day, 2016. Karl had this boyish charm that I was very drawn to, he was tall, handsome and very quick-witted.
Karl– When I first saw Emily, she lit up the room, I thought she was just amazing. When we started talking we clicked instantly, we both have the same sense of humour, and I felt like I had known her for years.
Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…
The proposal was a complete surprise to me!! Karl had been planning to propose on a holiday we had booked to Tasmania, however, due to sudden border closures we had to postpone our trip and unbeknownst to me, the proposal. Feeling sorry for ourselves that our holiday was cancelled, we decided to go to Moreton Island, QLD with my sister and her partner instead. I have since been told, Karl mentioned to my sister the day we arrived that he wanted to propose on the beach at sunset. So when it was nearing the end of the day, my sister Ebony rushed us down to the beach under the rouse that she wanted to test out their new drone. We had a couple of drinks on the beach, watching the sun go down and dolphins jump in and out of the waves when I turned around a saw Karl on one knee asking me to marry him and of course, I said yes! It was perfect.
Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding…
We knew we didn’t want a big, conventional wedding. We had thrown around the idea of an international elopement but the logistics of that seemed a little too overwhelming. So we went back to basics and decided we wanted something simple, intimate and relaxed. We landed on a mid-century AirBnb in Kingscliff, NSW that allowed our ceremony to be held in their beautiful backyard with our closest family and friends.
After the ceremony, we wanted the night to feel like a big dinner party rather than a wedding. We chose a Greek-inspired beachfront restaurant we both love in Kingscliff to celebrate over a delicious banquet.
