We wanted something intimate and casual.
Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love…
Daniel is a brewer, and I work in retail planning. We both lived in the inner west of Sydney for over a decade before making the move to the Blue Mountains, where we share a cottage with our cranky cat, Frankie. We love hosting friends and family and bringing people together over good food and better drinks.
How/where/when did you meet – and what were your first impressions?
We met the old-fashioned way… on Tinder. We had connected over a shared passion for art and drawing when Daniel asked if I’d go to the Art Gallery of NSW with him. He thought I was very shy, and I thought he was a bit too cool for school (it turns out we were both the exact opposite). Something sparked between us that day, and we’ve been inseparable since.
When did you first realise that this was someone you’d like to spend the rest of your life with?
Daniel says it was when we were eating Bahn Mi on his bed one day. It was just a simple, lazy morning a couple of months into dating. For me, it was when he went to a multi-day festival with a bunch of friends early in our relationship, and I felt how much I missed him. For both of us it was nothing dramatic, no big fanfare – just love! And Thats how our relationship has been ever since.
Was there a proposal? Tell us a little about it…
The proposal didn’t exactly go to plan. We got engaged in Launceston, Tasmania. We’d decided to go and check out the gorge (a local hiking destination) and while we were walking around I was telling Daniel that the gardens reminded me of where I grew up in Leura and he decided then and there that it was the perfect location. We had spoken about eventually getting married before, but never anything serious, so when I turned around to see Daniel on one knee, I was completely shocked. I was so caught out of the blue that my instinct was to tell him to get up! Not the answer he was expecting. Once the shock left my body and he had been assured that my answer was a resounding yes, we continued on our sightseeing, having one of the most beautiful afternoons trekking through snow-tipped mountains and spotting wombats. Even though it wasn’t perfect, when we came home and told our friends and family they all laughed with us and agreed it was the most “us” proposal ever.
Tell us about the vision you had for the mood or style of your wedding.
We wanted something intimate and casual. Our dream was to essentially have a big dinner party and treat everyone to an amazing meal. Our favourite dates are always when we’re out trying new restaurants and bars together, so we wanted to embody that atmosphere at our wedding.
What was one element you were happy to splurge on?
The venue! We knew we wanted to have our wedding in the inner west as the area has been such an important part of both of our lives. We both lived there and met there, and so many of our friends and family were there as well; it just felt right. We wanted to highlight the places that are special to us and an integral part of our love story. Having Marrickville restaurant “Baba’s Place” as our reception venue was a dream come true – not only is their menu incredible, but they are also so passionate about the local area and its history. They made us feel so welcome – from signature cocktails to finding a DJ for us at the last minute. They shuffled the whole restaurant around to give us a dance floor and let us squeeze every possible seat and table into the space to fit our guest list. It was the perfect venue for us and completely complimented the wedding we wanted to have.
Did anything happen on your wedding day that you laugh about in hindsight (even if it was stressful at the time)?
Our ceremony took place in a warehouse. Part of the charm of a venue like that is that it’s a blank space for all kinds of communities and events, but when Daniel dropped by on the afternoon of our wedding, he saw that they were still packing down from a rave the night before, it made him a little bit nervous. Luckily, I was none the wiser until after the ceremony.
Tell us about your main outfits, what was unique, is there a story?
I wore a silk dress and veil from Australian designer ‘Harriette Gordon’ and a sheer blouse from the designer ‘Harta’. I knew I wanted to try a Harriette Gordon dress but when I also saw that sheer blouse hanging on the rails at Sunday eve bridal, it was a match made in heaven. Daniel and I both enjoy fashion and expressing ourselves through clothing, so it was important that we felt like ourselves in our wedding outfits. I love vintage clothing, especially the 1970s, so the ruffle on that sheer blouse made my heart sing. Daniel designed a green, double-breasted suit paired with a bolo tie and Doc Martin loafers – his inspiration for the suit was 1990s Ralph Lauren.
